In 2008, DCNS started working on renewable marine energy, an area in which there are significant technological and industrial synergies with naval defence. DCNS is investing in three major technologies:
- tidal-current energy – converted using tidal turbines;
- ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) – which exploits water temperature gradient for the continuous production of electricity; and
- offshore floating wind energy – converted using floating wind turbines.
